Real-Life ‘Fault in Our Stars’ Wife Katie Prager Dies Five Days After Her Husband, Dalton

Katie Prager, the real-life Fault in Our Stars wife, has passed away. Her death comes just five days after her husband, Dalton, died. Both died from cystic fibrosis.

According to the couple’s joint Facebook page, Katie died the morning of Thursday, September 22.

“Early this morning, [Katie] gained her wish of being at home, in her bed, surrounded by her mom, dad, brother and her dogs, dying peacefully, away from the hospital, tubes, IVs,” her mom, Debbie, announced in an emotional post. “I know Dalton was waiting with open arms, as well as both her grandmother’s and a host of family and friends that have gone before her. I know it is selfish to be sad, I had her so many days, but she is in the arms of Jesus today and she can breathe without oxygen, she no longer has to do dialysis and He has taken away all the pain she endured. One important thing I have taken away from this is to live, just live … if there is something you want to do, don’t wait. Life is short, love as hard as you can.”

As previously reported by Us, Dalton, 25, died on Saturday, September 17. According to CNN, Dalton died at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He was hundreds of miles away from his wife, who was in hospice in Flemingsburg, Kentucky. According to Katie’s mom, the couple spoke via FaceTime just before he passed.

“She told him that she loved him,” Debbie told CNN. “We don’t know if he heard her.”

Katie later took to their joint Facebook page to remember her husband, writing on September 17: “My angel, my best friend, the love of my life, my husband went to be with the Lord our God today. Dalton fought a long hard battle with cystic fibrosis. He was a courageous fighter and ‘give up’ wasn’t in his vocabulary.”

The pair became known as the real-life Fault in Our Stars couple after the novel and film by the same title, which features characters Hazel and Augustus (played by Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort).

The Pragers met online while in the hospital and bonded over their illness. Despite doctors’ orders to not meet in person, the two fell in love and later married in 2011. Although they both fought for their lives throughout their marriage, Katie didn’t regret their decision.

“It gave me some of the best years of my life,” she told CNN prior to her death.
