Here’s your feel-good story of the day.

Kasey Simmons, a waiter from Little Elm, Texas, was waiting in line at Kroger supermarket on Tuesday, August 16, when he locked eyes with the customer ahead of him. “I could tell she had been crying,” the 32-year-old tells Us Weekly. “I don’t like anyone to have a crappy day.” So Simmons decided right then and there that he would pay for the stranger’s 17 dollars’ worth of groceries.

“As soon as she took out her credit card, I said, ‘I got it,’” Simmons tells Us. But the kindness didn’t stop there.

“I wrote down my email address and phone number,” he tells Us. “I told her, ‘Look, I work at Applebee’s, I usually close, which means I’m there till 2 a.m. If you can’t sleep and want to talk, I’ll buy you a dessert or coffee.’”

Says Simmons: “I knew something wasn’t right in her life.”

The next day, the Applebee’s server received a $500 dollar tip on a .37 cent flavored water. Next to the bill was a note scrawled on a napkin. It read:

“On behalf of the Sullivan family, I want to thank you for being the person you are. On one of the most depressing days of the year, (the death of my father, 3 year anniversary) you made my mother’s day wonderful. She has been smiling since you did what you did. Her grocery was only $17.00, and you insisted on paying and told her she was a very beautiful woman.”

Simmons understands the pain of anniversaries. “My daughter died four years ago when she was just 2 months old,” he tells Us. “I know what it’s like to lose somebody.”
